El Caribe - Puerto Viejo

I journeyed over to Puerto Viejo in the past few weeks, a small town on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica where the notorious surf break "Salsa Brava" is located. Puerto Viejo is a surf haven in Costa Rica and many of the best surfers from the country come from this area.

In these past few weeks I went to Puerto Viejo twice to catch the good surf and relaxed vibe. Here is Playa Cocles - a really fun beach break when there is a decent swell.

A very popular thing to do in Puerto Viejo is to rent bikes and cruise down the seemingly endless road that is lined with huge trees, howler monkies, sloths, sodas (small restaurants), and beaches. I rented a bike for $3 dollars for the day and found my own personal surf spot - no one around. It was fun, and pretty cool when the warm rain began to fall, but a little bit sketchy because no one was around.

Here is the hostel I stayed at - $5/night for a hammock.

  1. Wow! I could use a week or two at this beach, right about now!
